Striper Fishing – Shore of Chesapeake Bay?

My family has a house down at the Chesapeake Bay
This year, instead of catching the white perch, small blues and stripers (like.. no more than 10 inches), croakers, and spot fish, I want to try to catch some big stripers from shore.

At night, I walk in our back yard and last August, I saw a HUGE fish jump up and splash the water. I’ve been told that there are huge striped bass in the shore, and I believe that. Every year, I see a half eaten striped bass wash up to the shore, probably because of the blue fish.

How would you go about catching a nice, big striper from the shore?

Should I use live bait? If so, how should I set up the rig and what bait should I use?
Or should I use artificial? Which kinds of artificial lures should I use?

Having just left the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, Jan 2010, I believe that you are at the end of your Bay striper season.
I used a nice 9.5- 10 ft surf rod with a spinning reel that will allow you to cast out some 150–200 yards. I also used 2 horse head jigs of 1-2 oz. that have glow in the dark properties. At night, that is the key…Glow in the dark properties. (Casting spoons, crank baits and such).
But if they are running the shoreline, any fishing rig(rod/reel) that will handle 15-20lbs line will be adequate.
If you find an area that the stripers are shore feeding, cast along the shore ahead of the direction that they are moving and reel back to them. DON’T cast directly at them as that will scare them.
During the daylight time, use crab claws.
