Mid Atlantic Largemouth Bass Fishing Techniques
Freshwater fishing for largemouth bass is a popular outdoor activity along the Mid Atlantic Coast of the USA. Some of the best largemouth bass fishing of the region occurs in small farm ponds or brackish rivers and creeks. These quiet waterways provide essential habitat where largemouth bass can feed on forage species such bluegill and pumpkinseed sunfish.
Tackle and techniques for Mid Atlantic largemouth bass fishing varies with season, time of day, water temperatures, tides, water clarity, sunlight, barometric pressure and other factors. As with nearly all bass fishing, structure is critical.
Common largemouth bass structure includes:
- lily pads
- downed trees
- overhanging brush
- manmade structures (docks, piers, etc.)
- freshwater springs
- small creeks
- channel edges
- flats, shallows
Lure selection is important for success in these lakes, reservoirs, ponds and rivers. Popular tackle includes a few classic lures as well as state of the art rigs. Common lures for largemouth bass fishing in Maryland include:
- buzz baits
- surface plugs
- crank baits
- jerk baits
- texas rigs
Fly fishermen also find success on these rivers, choosing lures such as:
- streamers
- minnows
- poppers
- amphibian patterns
Most large lakes and rivers of the region have good access including boat ramps, public piers or bulkheads. Many of these waterways can be accessed thru state parks. Larger stretches of rivers are best fished with bass boats or shallow draft fishing boats while small bodies of water can be reached by kayak or canoe.
Taking a trip with a local guide is an excellent way to enjoy these fisheries. USA fishing guides fish often and know the best locations and times to target largemouth throughout the state. Most fishing guides provide a wide range of trips for largemouth bass and other species.
