Outdoor clothing – perfect clobber for keeping your great outdoors clean

The UK’s beaches are once again under scrutiny – if you didn’t know they ever had been and haven’t read the recent litter reports, here it is in a very small nutshell.

A 2009 survey by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) said that there was 77% more rubbish on Britain’s beaches than in 1994 and that 64% of the 1,849 items of litter collected per kilometre of beach was plastic. These are pretty serious statistics and it’s not the first time we’ve been given a wakeup call. In 2007, a similar survey from the MCS showed that litter on Britain’s beaches was up by 90% since 1994, plastic was again in the top ten worst offenders list.

Considering the huge surge in popularity of going on a good old fashioned British summer holiday, shouldn’t the quality be going up in a slightly more dramatic fashion? Apparently not, instead the rise in visitors to the UK’s 400 plus beaches has had a detrimental effect on these places of natural beauty, with people dropping plastic drink bottles, crisp and sandwich packets and plastic carrier bags left, right and centre. So what do we do about it? Well, don your winter warmers, get wind and rain battered and litter pick. It’s a social activity and one that is satisfying and surprisingly fun! If you’re not sure where to start, the internet is a good place – find a local group or start one if there isn’t one that suits you, your diary or your location.

It’s not enough to sit back and hope someone else will sort it out, if you’re into outdoor activities such as fishing, boating, surfing or flying a kite or you like to pack up a picnic when the sun peeks out, wouldn’t you rather do these things in or near clean water and surrounded by litter-free beaches?

The growing popularity of outdoor clothing brands in the UK suggests that people are enjoying the great outdoors more and more and some of these brands positively encourage corporate social responsibility, Fair trade and ethical commerce. So why not do your bit by buying men’s or women’s Fairtrade clothing, do a bit of litter picking on your local UK beach and then dive right into some outdoor sports? It’s pretty certain that whatever the British weather throws at you, you can find the scarf, hat or waterproof jacket to handle it, so no excuses, a bit of rain never hurt anyone!
