what lures to use at this time of year and for the up coming month?

well i usually dont fish this time of the year but im trying to get the best results this year so getting a head start for bass.what lures are best to use this time of year in small lakes and ponds?

The water is obviously still going to be cool in your area. I’m in Kentucky myself, and we have had some pretty nice and warm weather lately. These little warm spirts do get fish moving a little more than they have been throughout the winter, but they are still sluggish. Right now, you’ll still have to fish slow and fairly deep. I like using deeper diving crankbaits, jig and pig combos, Rattle Traps, jerkbaits, and I ocasionally slow roll spinnerbaits. If I were you, I would probably start off throwing something lik a medium to deep diving crankbait. You can use this as a “locator lure.” Fish it at different depths and in different spots; this will help you locate the fish, hence “locator lure.” If you experiment enough with it, you should start to notice somewhat of a pattern. You’ll find the general depth that fish are holding and what spots they tend to be holding. After you find these things out, you can then switch to other lures that may be more productive. But you may find that a crankbait is productive; in this case, you obviously don’t need to change up your presentation. It’s all about experimenting this time of year. Fish get into some weird and sometimes difficult patterns in cold water, but you can still have great days of fishing in these conditions.

It won’t be long before the fish are really hitting good again, though. After the warm spring weather sets in, fishing will be great. When the water hits the 60 degree mark, fishing will greatly improve. After the water is in the 65-70 degree range, the majority of fish will be spawning. This is a good time to get some very nice fish in the boat, but don’t be keeping the big ones. Many of these fish will be full of eggs and you don’t want to prevent them from laying them for obvious reasons.
