Thinking about getting a baitcast reel?

Ok so I’m a novice at fishing (I’m sure some of you have seen some of my questions around here) anyways I was thinking about getting a baitcast reel but I’m a little worried as to how well I would do with it. I know you control the casting similar to how you control a spinning reel (I know baitcast you use your thumb and spinning you use your index finger). Now when you’re reeling it in do you have to hold your thumb over the line to reel it in or do you reel it in as if you were using a spincasting reel?

Also how hard is it to reline a baitcast because if I do buy one I’m gonna switch out the pre-spooled line for some line I already have.

Like I said I’m a novice so if I said some stuff that isnt right dont get too mad
Something else I thought about. Would basspro reline a reel for me?

A baitcasting reel takes some time to get accustomed to for even any experienced fisherman. The tricky part is keeping the right amount of pressure on the spool with your thumb when you are casting. See the spool of a baitcaster will continue to spin if it still has momentum, even if your bait is already in the water and you don’t need anymore line out. Where people get frustrated is if you don’t keep enough pressure on the spool, the spool will cause the line to backlash and produce what is referred to as a birds nest. There will be knobs on the side of your baitcasting reels that will adjust the pressure that the reel itself will apply to spool for you. The more pressure applied to the spool, the less casting distance you will be able to work with. Ideally, you want to be able to get to the point where you can cast a reasonable distance and know exactly how much pressure to put with your thumb and when to tighten up the pressure and stop the spool from spinning.

Putting line on a baitcasting reel actually is easier than a spinning reel. I would recommend wrapping the line around the spool twice and then pulling a knot tight to give your line a good grip of the spool.

Yes, any local fishing tackle shop should put line on for you, as well as take it off. The tackle shop I go to, Southeastern Fishing Tackle Liquidators in Tampa, charges per yard for spooling line on reels.

You should be able to get the hang of a baitcasting reel is you are willing to be patient and play with the settings on the reel until you get it just the way you want it.

http://www.fishsoutheastern.com/xcart/product.php?productid=16692&cat=249&page=2 This is the first baitcasting reel I ever bought. It was a great beginner reel for me. What i liked the best about it was the “Easy magnetic cast control.” This feature allowed me to change how much the reel was helping me with casting as I continued to get better using the reel.

Hope this helps
